WE   WERE   ASKED   WHAT   WE   KNEW   ABOUT   WHITE   POT.   THE   ANSWER   WAS   "VERY   LITTLE".
WE   BEGAN   OUR   SEARCH   WITH   WIKIPEDIA:   GO   TO   WIKIPEDIA

"By 1653, though, English and Dutch farmers moved into the area and founded a community called Whitepot,
which was a part of the Township of Newtown. Whitepot is believed to be so named because the original
Dutch settlers named the area "Whiteput", or "hollow creek"; later, English settlers Anglicized the name."

NEARLY 60 YEARS AGO I MET TOM RAHILLY (REILLY) A 97 YEAR OLD RETIRED ENGINEER. HE REMEMBERED WHITEPOT
AS A MAIN LINE SAND SIDING.   ON OLD MAPS THERE IS A SAND PIT NEAR FLEET STREET ON THE GLENDALE CUTOFF.

THIS 1852 MAP PREDATES THE NEW YORK AND JAMAICA RAILROAD.   IT SHOWS WHITE POT ROAD
EXTENDING FROM VAN WYCK AVENUE NORTH EAST TOWARD CORONA AND FLUSHING.


ON HIS MODERN MAP BOB EMERY NOTES: "THIS AREA KNOWN AS WHITE POT JUNCTION".
HE SHOWS "YELLOWSTONE BLVD (UNDERGRADE CROSSING) - EX WHITE POT ROAD."

WE   FIRST   FIND   IT   IN   NOVEMBER   8   1874   WORKING   TABLE
NUMBER   ELEVEN   WHERE   IT   IS   CALLED   WHITEPOT   SWITCH.


IN 1879 THE MANUAL BLOCK SYSTEM WAS PLACED IN SERVICE BETWEEN LONG ISLAND CITY AND WINFIELD.


1880 WHEN SOUTHERN DIVISION TRAINS WERE ALL USING THE MAIN LINE, THERE WERE MANY MEETS THERE.
 

E.T.T. NUMBER 14-B MAY 3 1880 - TRAINS MET AT 8:14 A.M., 8:47 A.M., 1:46 P.M. AND 7:16 P.M.
 

IN 1892 THE MANUAL BLOCK SYSTEM WAS PLACED IN SERVICE BETWEEN JAMAICA AND WINFIELD JUNCTION.
BILL SLADE DETERMINED THAT THERE WERE THREE TOWERS BETWEEN WINFIELD JUNCTION AND JAMAICA:

TOWER NUMBER 37 - 4.9 MILES FROM L.I.C. - 45 FEET EAST OF CALDWELL AVE.
    TOWER NUMBER 38 - 6.0 MILES FROM L.I.C. - .33 MILES WEST OF WHITE POT ROAD
TOWER NUMBER 39 - 7.6 MILES FROM L.I.C. - .2 MILE WEST OF MAPLE GROVE
MAPLE GROVE STATION - 7.8 MILES FROM L.I.C.

E.T.T. NUMBER FOUR, SEPTEMBER 21 1897 SHOWS "WHITE POT" ON SINGLE TRACK WITH
A DAY-NIGHT TELEGRAPH OFFICE.   THE TELEGRAPH OFFICE WAS LIKELY OPENED THERE IN 1892.

THE   1903   C.R.4.   SHOWS   "WHITE   POT   (Siding)"   6.17   MILES   FROM   LONG   ISLAND   CITY

IN 1903 DOUBLE TRACK WITH AUTOMATIC SIGNALS WAS INSTALLED JAMAICA
TO WINFIELD JUNCTION, ELIMINATING THE MANUAL BLOCK SYSTEM.
