GREAT   NECK   JUNCTION

THE   FLUSHING   BRANCH

NEW APRIL 28, 2002 - REVISED JULY 4

GREAT NECK JUNCTION WAS CREATED IN 1873 WHEN ALEXANDER T. STEWART'S NEW CENTRAL RAIL ROAD OF LONG ISLAND WAS CONNECTED WITH THE FLUSHING AND NORTH SIDE RAILROAD. THE ORIGINAL POINT OF SWITCH IS
SHOWN AT THE LEFT SIDE OF THIS 1916 BLUEPRINT AT THE UPPER ARROW ABOVE THE NUMBER "50".
THE NUMBER "385" APPEARS TWICE AT THE RIGHT: THE UPPER "385" IS ON THE MAIN TRACKS TO GREAT NECK AND PORT WASHINGTON, THE LOWER "385" IS ON THE C.R.R.L.I. TRACKS WHICH BECAME THE FLUSHING BRANCH IN 1879 WHEN THE LINE BETWEEN LAWRENCE STREET AND CREEDMOOR WAS ABANDONED.

THE SWITCH TO THE FLUSHING BRANCH WAS EVENTUALLY MOVED WEST,
PROBABLY WHEN THE MAIN TRACKS THROUGH FLUSHING WERE RAISED IN 1912.
THESE TWO PHOTOS BY BILL SLADE WERE TAKEN IN 1953.

TWO 1978 VIEWS.

THE BROKEN LINE CURVING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT IS THE ORIGINAL C.R.R.L.I. CENTER LINE.
NOTE THAT THE TRACKS CURVED TO THE SOUTH OF THE ORIGINAL RIGHT-OF-WAY.

CIRCA 1950 HENRY RAUDENBUSCH MAP SHOWS THE SOUTHERNMOST TRACK CURVING NORTH
TO THE ALIGNMENT OF THE NORTH TRACK BEYOND THE NORTH TRACK'S END
AND TWO SPUR TRACKS TO THE SOUTHWEST.

THIS 1916 BLUEPRINT SHOWS TWO SIDETRACKS SOUTHWEST OF THE OLD C.R.R.L.I. TRACKS.

A TUNNEL CARRIED THE C.R.R.L.I. UNDER LAWRENCE STREET AND AVERY (BANK) STREET.  THIS BUILDING,
PHOTOGRAPHED IN 1978, WAS ERECTED ON LAWRENCE STREET AT THE SITE OF THE NORTH PORTAL.

SUBSEQUENTLY THE AREA NORTH OF THE BUILDING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN EXCAVATED CREATING A "CUT"
SIMILAR TO THE APPROACH TO THE TUNNEL. PHOTO MAY 21, 2002.
