MONTAUK   CUT   OFF     -     MAIN   LINE   CUT   OFF     -     CABIN   M


BEFORE   THE   OPENING   OF   PENN   STATION   MOST   FREIGHT   TRAINS   USED   THE   MAIN   LINE   BETWEEN   LONG   ISLAND   CITY   AND   JAMAICA.   TO   ALLOW   TRAINS   FROM   THE   NORTH   SHORE   FREIGHT   YARD,   AND   THE   MAIN   LINE   AT   F   AND   H   TOWERS,   ACCESS   TO   THE   MONTAUK   DIVISION   AT   BLISSVILLE   THE   MONTAUK   CUT   OFF   AND   MAIN   LINE   CUT   OFF   WERE   BUILT.



FOR   A   NUMBER   OF   YEARS   TRAINS   "KEPT   RIGHT"   AS   INDICATED   BY   THE
SIGNALS   ON   THIS   TRACK   PLAN   AND   THERE   WERE   DERAILS   ON   BOTH   TRACKS.


BY   1926   TRAINS   WERE   RUNNING   ON   THE   LEFT   TRACK
(BETTER   FOR   OPERATIONS   IN   THE   N. S.   FREIGHT   YARD)
AND   THE   DERAIL   HAD   BEEN REMOVED   FROM   THE   WESTBOUND   TRACK.


BY   1944   SMASHBOARDS   HAD   BEEN   INSTALLED   -   CONTROLLED
BY   LEVER   10   -   AND   THE   DERAIL   HAD   BEEN   REMOVED.


THE   MONTAUK   CUT   OFF   HAS   A   LIFTBRIDGE   OVER   DUTCH   KILLS   WHICH   IS
OPERATED   FROM   CABIN   M.   THIS   VIEW   IS   FROM   DUTCH   KILLS   DRAWBRIDGE.
THAT   SMALL   GREEN   STRUCURE   IN   THE   CENTER   OF   THE   PHOTO   IS   AN   OUT-HOUSE.

THE   NORTH   SHORE   FREIGHT   YARD   APPROACH   RAMP.
THE   H51   CONSOLIDATION   IS   A   REAR - END   HELPER
THE   PHOTOGRAPH   IS   A   CIRCA   1910   CYANOTYPE .


ABOUT   1928   THIRD   RAIL   WAS   INSTALLED   AS   FAR   AS   BX
INTERLOCKING   SO   THAT   THE   WESTBOUND   PORT   WASHINGTON   BRANCH
FREIGHT   WITH   A   DD1   COULD   CLEAR   THE   SWITCH   TO   THE
MAIN   LINE   CUT   OFF   AND   THEN   BACK   INTO   THE   N. S.   YARD.
