THE LAST PENNSYLVANIA STEAM LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE PRR 5741 FIFTY SEVEN FORTY ONE ON THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD - AUGUST 1955 |
IN OCTOBER 1951 FOUR K4s's WERE RETURNED TO THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD - THE LAST OF MANY PENNSY ENGINES WHICH HAD BEEN LEASED TO THE LONG ISLAND SINCE 1900. IN AUGUST 1955 ARRT HEARD THAT THERE WAS A K4 IN MORRIS PARK. AS SOON AS HE COULD ARRT WENT THERE AND SAW AND PHOTOGRAPHED ENGINE NUMBER 5741 - A G5s WITH A SMALL P.R.R. TENDER. W. J. (BILL) RUGEN PHOTOGRAPHED THE 5741 ON AUGUST 29 - IN STEAM AND WITH A LARGE LONG ISLAND TENDER, PROBABLY OFF ENGINE NUMBER 21. DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER ARRT PHOTOGRAPHED THE VISITOR IN HOLBAN YARD WHERE SHE HAD BROUGHT A WORK TRAIN. IT WAS SAID THAT ONE EVENING THERE WAS NO A.S.C. EQUIPPED ENGINE FOR TRAIN 660 AND THAT P.R.R. 5741 PULLED THE TRAIN AS A PASSENGER EXTRA. ALAS NO PHOTOGRAPH. THE 5741 WAS PRESERVED BY THE PENNSYLVANIA AND RESIDES AT THE RAILROAD MUSEUM OF PENNSYLVANIA IN STRASBURG. |
